What's New
There are lots of new things happening with Friends, and we'd like to share a few of them with you here.
Traveling Shirts
Where in the world is that Prouty T-shirt?
Try as we might, we can’t seem to order exactly the right number of Prouty tee shirts in the right sizes. (With an event of 3500+ people that kind of estimating can be a little tough! J) This year we found recipients all over the globe that were more then happy to take them off our hands. In January, Prouty 100-miler, Patrick Schembri, brought 50 tee shirts with him to the Dominican Republic. While providing medical services to some of the poorer communities, Patrick (a Physician Assistant at DHMC), distributed the Prouty shirts to some very grateful and enthusiastic girls and boys. (See photo) Later this year Dr. Dean Seibert will take the remaining tee shirts to Honduras as part of the ACTS program. There they will be given to local people who run outlets that provide affordable items to the very poor. A portion of the small profit that is made goes to the individuals running the outlets and a portion goes to a regional library and education center that ACTS is helping them establish. We are so excited that the benefits of the Prouty extend well beyond our region. If you have any photos or you or someone you know wearing their Prouty tee shirt in a far-away location, please send them to Michelle Schembri at michelle.schembri@dartmouth.edu and perhaps you will become part of the next addition of ‘Where in the world is that Prouty tee shirt?’
Making the Grade
Some enterprising young middle school students in Bristol, NH have taken it upon themselves to help raise money for the Norris Cotton Cancer Center.
Last year students and teachers from Newfound Memorial Middle School in Bristol, NH rallied around a staff member’s spouse as she underwent chemotherapy. She was feeling a bit low, in particular about her hair loss, so some of the students along with their teachers decided to shave their heads in solidarity. Thanks to their efforts more than $3000 was raised for the Familial Cancer Program and 200 inches of hair was collected for the organization Locks of Love. The second annual Shave Your Head A-Thon will take place on February 21. This year the students plan to donate the money to the Haelan Program at Norris Cotton Cancer Center. The program provides services like massage, reiki and support groups to patients at the Cancer Center. We thank these inspiring young students and their teachers for creatively supporting this program and Norris Cotton Cancer Center.
