And what a day it was. More than 17 radio stations, including those from broadcast companies such as Dartmouth Radio, Nassau Broadcasting, Koor Communications, and Upper Valley Radio put down their competitive microphones and came together to help fight cancer. Polly lost her battle to breast cancer in January 2008, but her husband, Ryan Loyd, and her mom and dad, were all on hand to help honor Polly’s memory. The day was filled with stories about Polly, and interviews with the researchers, doctors, nurses, volunteers and staff people who help make Norris Cotton Cancer Center one of the 41 national Comprehensive Cancer Centers designated by the National Cancer Institute.
The radio-thon honors not only Polly, but all the people courageously facing this disease. Money raised will help support innovative young investigators and their new ideas with seed money. Dollars will help fund clinical trials, will buy state-of-the-art equipment, and will make possible support services for patients and their families that would otherwise have no source of funding.

Shortly before her death, Polly put together this brief autobiography, revealing a bit more of caring, courageous person she was. “I may be one of the most spontaneous, fun-loving people you’ll ever meet, because I prefer having a good time over taking my life too seriously. I am happily married to my soul mate, Ryan. We’ve been together since 1994. We eloped in 1999, but we’re hoping to have a regular wedding with all our friends and family someday. Ever since February 2006 I’ve been fighting my own personal war against breast cancer. But I was raised tough, thanks to my family, and no matter what happens I will never let cancer affect my mind. I followed my childhood dream into radio broadcasting and it has been an amazing journey."
